History of the FIFA world cup
Football’s world Cup, officially the FIFA World Cup, is a four-year competition between men’s national teams that crowns the world champion. With billions of fans watching each match on television, it is most likely the most watched sport on the earth.
The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) held the first FIFA world cup competition in 1930, which was won by Uruguay. Since then, the competition has been held every four years. It comprises international sectional tournaments that lead to a final elimination match between 32 national teams.
Since 1930, when Uruguay hosted the first ever official FIFA World Cup match, the competition has taken place every four years. However, there were unofficial pre-FIFA World Cups held as early as the late 1800s, when there were not many national teams.
Before 1930, there was also the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, which was held in 1909 and 1911. In addition, the Summer Olympic football tournaments would serve as a benchmark for the top national teams prior to 1930.
